NORTH WEST — A landmark Boitekong GBV sentencing has resulted in a 34-year-old man being handed a strict 10-year direct imprisonment term for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The Tlhabane Regional Court delivered the decisive ruling on Thursday, 9 July 2026, sending a strong message of accountability regarding domestic abuse in the community.
The severe altercation took place on the evening of Sunday, 18 May 2025, at a residence in Meriting Extension 1. According to evidence presented during the trial, the 37-year-old victim had gone to visit her boyfriend when the situation turned violent. Unfounded accusations of infidelity led the man to repeatedly punch the woman, leaving her with extensive bruising across her body. Following the brutal beating, he confined her inside a room. The victim ultimately managed to break free from her confinement and flee to the Boitekong SAPS to seek help.
Law enforcement acted swiftly on the case. The suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, which was the exact same day the victim formally reported the incident to the police. He was brought before the Tlhabane Magistrates’ Court for his first appearance on Thursday, 22 May 2025, where the court denied him bail. Following a thorough probe, the case was elevated, leading to his conviction and the recent decade-long sentence.
Beyond the 10 years behind bars, the presiding court also declared the convicted man unfit to possess a firearm. This additional penalty was enacted in accordance with Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000), ensuring he cannot legally acquire or hold weapons in the future.
Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae, the District Commissioner for Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2, publicly praised the outcome of the Boitekong GBV sentencing. She noted that the strict penalty highlights the criminal justice system’s steadfast dedication to ensuring that those who commit gender-based violence are held fully accountable for their actions.
Brigadier Ntoagae also highlighted the critical role played by law enforcement and legal teams in securing the conviction. She specifically commended Constable Mashao Jacob Makwela from the Boitekong Detectives for his meticulous investigative work, alongside the prosecution team for their effective and diligent presentation of the case in court.
