CAPE TOWN, Western Cape — A devastating Cape Town mass shooting has claimed the lives of at least 16 people across three separate incidents, with the deadliest attack occurring at an unlicensed entertainment venue in Lwandle. The coordinated wave of violence has left communities in mourning and prompted a severe police crackdown on unlicensed establishments and negligent venue operators.
Deadly Attack at Unlicensed Lwandle Venue
The most lethal incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning in Lwandle, where gunmen stormed a popular entertainment venue and opened fire on patrons. The attack left 10 people dead and 11 others injured.
According to preliminary investigations, five victims died at the scene, while another five succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital. Authorities believe the victims were predominantly young people. Preliminary evidence suggests that two gunmen entered the premises from the back before unleashing the deadly barrage of gunfire.
Prior Warnings Ignored: Police Probe Negligence
A major focal point of the ongoing investigation is the operational status of the Lwandle venue. The establishment, operating as a meat stall or “shisanyama,” did not possess a valid liquor license.
The Chairperson of the local Community Police Forum (CPF), revealed that the venue’s owner was explicitly warned about the illegal consumption of alcohol on the premises just 72 hours before the massacre. During a joint visit by the CPF and local police on Friday afternoon, the owner claimed he only sold meat and food, insisting that patrons brought their own alcohol. The CPF captain advised the owner to implement stricter security measures to ensure patron safety.
Later that same day, the Captain of the Lwandle Police Station visited the site, found patrons consuming alcohol, and officially ordered the establishment to close. However, the owner defied the closure order and reopened. Furthermore, while neighboring stalls were required to close by 10:00 p.m., the venue remained open until 1:00 a.m. under the guise of hosting an “opening party.”
The Provincial Police Commissioner confirmed that authorities are currently interviewing the owner. Given the ignored warnings and the flagrant violation of closure orders, police are actively considering charging the owner with negligence in connection to the mass casualty event.
Two Additional Fatal Shootings in Khayelitsha and Milnerton
The tragedy in Lwandle was part of a broader night of violence across the city. In a separate incident in Khayelitsha, four people were shot dead after being attacked while sitting inside a vehicle. Three victims died at the scene, and the fourth was transported to a hospital where they later died from their injuries.
Meanwhile, in Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton, two men were fatally shot and a third was injured.
Community in Mourning as Investigation Continues
In the aftermath of the Lwandle shooting, the scene was cordoned off to allow forensic investigators to comb the area and extract crucial evidence, though bloodstains remained visible near where children were later seen playing.
The aftermath has been marked by chaos and desperation. Family members have been flocking to the venue and local hospitals, frantically searching for their loved ones. Many relatives reported being turned away from hospitals due to the overwhelming chaos and the high volume of casualties.
Police are thoroughly reviewing CCTV footage from the Lwandle venue to identify the two suspects.
