NORTHERN CAPE – The Carnarvon Regional Court in the Northern Cape has handed down a 20-year imprisonment sentence to a 22-year-old man convicted of raping his 42-year-old mother at their family residence.
The incident occurred on 23 November 2025. Court records indicate that the victim was asleep when she awoke to find the accused on top of her. Upon recognizing her son, she screamed and confronted him about his actions, causing him to immediately stop. After the victim alerted her husband to the situation, the accused fled the home.
Following the formal police report, the case was assigned to Detective Constable Leevirne Nathalie Raaf of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Her comprehensive investigation utilized forensic DNA analysis, which conclusively linked the suspect to the crime scene and facilitated his subsequent arrest.
During multiple pre-trial court appearances, Detective Constable Raaf successfully opposed the accused’s bail applications, ensuring he remained in custody. On Friday, 28 August 2026, the Carnarvon Regional Court formally found him guilty of rape.
In addition to the 20-year direct prison term, the presiding officer ordered that the convicted man’s name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. The court also issued a formal declaration rendering him unfit to possess a firearm.
Major General Nomana Mtukushe, District Commissioner of the Pixley ka Seme District, publicly commended Detective Constable Raaf for her professionalism. Major General Mtukushe emphasized that the investigator’s meticulous and dedicated work was pivotal in achieving the successful conviction and securing the substantial sentence in this severe case of familial violence.
