GAUTENG — A major cash-in-transit robbery was successfully thwarted in Daveyton after a joint operation by the Gauteng SAPS and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) raided a suspected syndicate safe house on the East Rand.
Acting on precise intelligence, a coordinated team comprising Gauteng police detectives, intelligence structures, and EMPD officers stormed a residential property on Wednesday evening. The targeted strike aimed to intercept a notorious gang believed to be responsible for a string of severe and violent crimes across the province before they could launch their planned heist.
During a thorough search of the Daveyton premises, law enforcement officials uncovered a massive stash of tactical equipment and illegal firearms. The recovered arsenal included seven rifles, a single pistol, and multiple reflector jackets typically worn during high-risk heists. Additionally, officers secured a hijacked BMW X5 that had been utilized by the criminal network.
Despite the successful disruption of the plot and the confiscation of the weapons and vehicle, several identified suspects managed to flee the scene. Authorities have since launched an intensive overnight manhunt to track down and apprehend the fugitives.
Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, the Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), highly praised the seamless collaboration between the various law enforcement agencies. She emphasized that the successful raid highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in disrupting organized crime.
“This intelligence-driven operation is a clear indication that the SAPS remains resolute in its mission to combat cash-in-transit robberies and other serious and violent crimes,” Lieutenant General Dimpane stated. “We have made significant inroads in dismantling CIT syndicates, and we will continue to deal decisively with those who terrorise our communities and endanger the lives of innocent citizens.”
The Acting National Commissioner also issued a stern warning to remaining syndicate members, noting that enhanced police capabilities are rapidly closing the net on their operations.
“Cash-in-transit robberies are highly organised and violent crimes that require a coordinated response from law enforcement,” she added. “Our intelligence capabilities continue to improve, and we are closing in on those responsible. We will hunt them down, arrest them and ensure they face the full might of the law.”
Investigations at the East Rand safe house remain active as authorities continue to process the scene. Police anticipate further arrests as the manhunt escalates and intelligence gathering continues to dismantle the broader criminal network.
