PRETORIA, Gauteng — The latest Competition Commission Cost of Living Report has raised urgent concerns that South African consumers are bearing a disproportionate burden of rising prices, leaving households with minimal flexibility in their monthly budgets. As the cost of basic essentials continues to climb, the financial strain on the public has prompted calls for deeper industry scrutiny and potential regulatory intervention.
According to the report, a significant portion of household income is currently being diverted toward food and basic services, making it increasingly difficult for families to absorb any further price increases. While rising fuel costs have traditionally been cited as the primary driver behind the escalating prices of food and other essential items, the Commission is now questioning whether these continuous hikes are entirely justified.
Ntokozo Khumalo of Newsroom Afrika, providing insight into the Commission’s findings, noted that the regulatory body is considering launching a major investigation into the industry. This potential probe will target both producers and retailers to determine if the continuous month-on-month price increases at the supermarket till are genuinely linked to fuel costs. The Commission highlighted a specific concern regarding food baskets: while certain input costs have actually declined over time, the final prices paid by consumers continue to tick upward.
This cost-of-living pressure is felt most acutely by low-income households, who already spend the bulk of their earnings on basic sustenance and are least equipped to handle compounding financial shocks.
Beyond groceries, the report also flags mounting anxiety over data and connectivity costs. Inflation within the telecommunications sector has reportedly surpassed the general inflation print published by Statistics South Africa. This trend is particularly alarming given that the industry has seen notable improvements in both infrastructure and the competitive landscape, with more players entering the market. Because reliable data connectivity is a critical enabler of broader economic activity, the Commission stressed that these pricing dynamics must be urgently addressed.
In light of these findings, the Commission is calling on the government and retail industry stakeholders to actively help consumers shoulder some of this financial burden. In a persistently low-growth economic environment, the report emphasizes that businesses must avoid passing the full weight of operational costs onto the consumer, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations are not pushed further into financial distress.
