DA Leader Geordin Hill-Lewis Defends Cabinet Reshuffle Strategy Following Historic Evaton West By-Election

EVATON, Gauteng — Democratic Alliance leader Geordin Hill-Lewis is pushing back against claims of internal friction, defending his proposed DA Cabinet reshuffle as a vital strategic maneuver aimed at securing victory in the 2029 general elections. Speaking in the wake of a groundbreaking by-election triumph in Evaton West, Hill-Lewis outlined his long-term vision for the party’s future while also addressing upcoming national protests.

Strategic Rotation Ahead of 2029
Addressing recent political maneuvers, Hill-Lewis clarified that his push to alter the party’s executive representation is not a move to sideline veteran members, but rather a necessary step to build a more robust organization. Earlier this month, he formally communicated with President Cyril Ramaphosa to suggest a revamped lineup for the DA’s Cabinet team. This proposal notably involves replacing Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen, who previously served as the party’s leader.

Hill-Lewis characterized the proposal as a natural evolution for a political organization eyeing national dominance. He emphasized the need for a “rotation in the team” to introduce fresh blood and create new opportunities for emerging leaders. The ultimate objective, he noted, requires a significant shift in momentum to make the DA the largest political force in South Africa by the time voters head to the polls in 2029.

A Demographic Milestone in Ward 28
The strategic discussions coincided with a major electoral milestone for the opposition party in Ward 28. Celebrating the by-election results on the ground, Hill-Lewis highlighted that the party successfully captured a completely black, township-based ward for the first time in its history.

He touted this achievement as definitive proof of the DA’s unparalleled demographic reach, asserting it is the only South African political organization capable of securing victories across every single community type in the nation. Framing the win as a testament to the party’s diversity, he remarked that the historic result sends a clear message to the rest of the country: if communities like Evaton West can choose change, then any place can.

Calls for Lawful Action on Immigration Protests
Beyond internal party mechanics and electoral gains, the DA leader also commented on the nationwide demonstrations regarding illegal immigration scheduled for Tuesday. While he validated the public’s underlying frustrations on the matter as legitimate and understandable, he drew a hard line against unlawful conduct.

Hill-Lewis cautioned citizens to strictly avoid vigilantism, chaos, and violence, stressing that grievances must be expressed peacefully and within the boundaries of the law. Furthermore, he urged the public to resist political actors attempting to hijack the protests to incite division. He called on South Africans to actively reject those pushing for disorder, encouraging the public to bring out the “best version” of themselves rather than descending into the worst.
