GAUTENG — A violent armed robbery and ensuing shootout at the Crown Mines Shopping Centre has left one suspected gunman dead and sparked a massive police manhunt. Gauteng law enforcement officials are currently investigating multiple charges—including murder, attempted murder, and illegal firearms possession—stemming from the brazen attack on the Johannesburg mall on Thursday, 13 August 2026.
According to the Gauteng Police Spokesperson, the chaos unfolded at approximately 10:30 a.m. when a staff member, escorted by mall security, was transporting an undisclosed sum of cash to the facility’s main safe. The pair was suddenly ambushed by two armed assailants who forced them to the ground at gunpoint, seizing the cash along with a security guard’s mobile phone.
The victim managed to discreetly trigger a panic button, rapidly mobilizing additional security forces. Guards stationed at the primary entrance quickly identified the getaway vehicle—a red Volkswagen Polo carrying five suspects—speeding toward the mall’s exit. When security personnel intervened to block their escape, the suspects opened fire, triggering an intense shootout.
During the exchange of gunfire, the suspects’ speeding Polo collided with an unrelated vehicle entering the premises, bringing their escape to an abrupt halt. One suspect, who remained trapped inside the crashed vehicle, suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The surviving assailants scattered on foot to evade capture.
In the ensuing chaos, one gunman attempted to hijack a Toyota Quantum but was successfully thwarted by local taxi operators, while mall security apprehended another fleeing suspect. Authorities confirmed that two suspects sustained gunshot injuries during the clash and are currently hospitalized under strict police guard. Two additional suspects managed to escape the scene and remain at large, with police actively searching the surrounding areas. Tragically, one security guard was also shot during the confrontation and is receiving medical care.
Following the shootout, investigators recovered the stolen cash in its entirety. A sweep of the scene yielded a significant weapons cache, including three pistols and an AK-47 assault rifle. The Gauteng Police Spokesperson noted that the red Volkswagen Polo was found displaying counterfeit license plates. The vehicle was traced back to a previous hijacking and was originally reported stolen at the Jeppe Police Station.
Forensic teams discovered that the serial numbers on all four recovered firearms had been deliberately filed off to obscure their origins. The weapons are now slated for comprehensive ballistic testing to determine if the syndicate can be linked to a broader string of violent criminal activities across the province.
