DURBAN, KwaZulu-Natal — A serious incident involving a truck looted after brake failure in Durban has prompted a dual investigation into a highway crash and subsequent cargo theft. In the early hours of the morning, a heavy goods vehicle lost control on a steep decline near the N2 highway, ultimately overturning and drawing a large crowd of opportunistic looters.
The sequence of events began on Booth Road, along the route heading toward the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. According to available details, the truck suffered a critical brake failure at the crest of the hill. Facing dangerous downhill momentum, the driver made a concerted effort to protect other motorists, swerving through active traffic to avoid a direct collision. Despite these evasive maneuvers, the truck clipped a light vehicle before flipping onto its side, finally coming to a rest approximately 400 to 500 meters down the road, in the vicinity of the Pavilion Mall.
Emergency services responded rapidly to the chaotic scene. ALS paramedics assessed the individuals involved, providing on-site treatment to both the truck operator and the driver of the light vehicle for minor injuries sustained during the impact.
However, the situation quickly deteriorated from a traffic accident into a public order incident. Eyewitness accounts indicate that a substantial crowd gathered around the immobilized truck and began systematically looting its cargo. Officials from the Durban Metro Police were dispatched to the location and initially succeeded in dispersing the onlookers.
Yet, authorities noted a challenging aftermath: once the police presence cleared the immediate area, members of the nearby community returned to the site and took possession of the remaining items left in the overturned vehicle.
Motorists are advised to remain vigilant in the area as recovery operations and official investigations into the mechanical failure and the looting continue.
