Ekurhuleni Officials Arrested in SAPS Takedown as EMPD Deputy Chief Held

Former City Manager Imogen Mashazi summoned to face charges alongside current and former municipal employees at Germiston Magistrate's Court.

GERMISTON, Gauteng – In a significant crackdown on local government misconduct, four Ekurhuleni officials arrested during an overnight police operation are now in custody. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the Commissions Recommendations Task Team executed the coordinated takedown across multiple locations in Johannesburg.

A high-profile figure among the detained is Julius Mkhwanazi, the suspended Deputy Chief of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD). His apprehension marks a major development in the ongoing scrutiny of the municipality’s law enforcement and administrative leadership.

Deep-Rooted Municipal Investigation

Law enforcement authorities clarified that the investigation reaches deep into the local government structure. In a official statement, the police noted that those arrested include current and former employees of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, indicating that the probe is targeting insiders rather than external actors.

The widening net of the investigation has also extended to the municipality’s past executive leadership. While not taken into immediate physical custody during the dawn raids, former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi has been formally implicated in the probe. Authorities have issued a directive for Mashazi to present herself at her nearest police station to be processed in connection with the matter.

Court Proceedings and Next Steps

The four suspects currently in police holding cells are scheduled to make their first appearance before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court this morning to face the charges brought against them.

Law enforcement agencies have maintained a tight lid on the specific details of the alleged offenses thus far to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. However, the SAPS has assured the public that they will provide further details and a comprehensive briefing once the suspects have officially appeared in court.

As the legal process unfolds, the arrests serve as a stark reminder that the Commissions Recommendations Task Team is actively pursuing accountability and rooting out irregularities at the municipal level.
