Elderly Traditional Leader in Court as Forest Dispute Turns Deadly

Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape — A 76-year-old traditional authority figure is set to stand before the Ngqeleni Magistrates Court today on charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with a weekend shooting.

Police spokespersons confirmed the suspect is accused of firing upon three community members who were gathering firewood in a forested plantation area. Authorities further verified that one of the injured victims, who had been hospitalized following the incident, has died as a result of their wounds.

The case was initially presented in court on Tuesday but was adjourned after the presiding magistrate stepped aside, stating they could not preside due to a prior professional association with the accused.

Community spokespersons representing residents of Godini and Bhantini villages indicated that locals plan to assemble outside the courthouse to oppose any bail application. They contend the suspect has a history of attempting to block community access to the plantation, claiming the land is reserved solely for the people of Bhantini.

“The forest has been a shared resource for generations,” remarked a community spokesperson. “Residents have endured repeated threats over a practice they have carried out for years. This violence has brought long-standing tensions to a breaking point.”

Police spokespersons stated that the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue. Relatives of the deceased victim, along with the two surviving injured individuals, are expected to be present for the hearing.

The proceedings have attracted considerable community interest, with many residents voicing concerns about both the fatal altercation and the broader dispute over land and resource access. Today’s session is anticipated to cover the formal reading of charges and initial bail arguments.
