Emalahleni Foreign National Shops Face Closure in Klarinet After Fatal Food Poisoning Claims Two Lives

Tensions rise in Mpumalanga as residents demand the removal of informal retailers following the tragic deaths of a child and an adult linked to contaminated goods.

KLARINET, Mpumalanga — The Klarinet community in Mpumalanga has initiated widespread shop closures, demanding that Emalahleni foreign national shops operating in the area cease operations immediately. This decisive action by residents follows a tragic incident where two family members allegedly died from consuming contaminated food purchased from an informal retailer.

The atmosphere in the area remains highly charged as groups of community members move systematically from store to store. According to residents leading the initiative, the operation is strictly non-violent. They maintain that they are not engaging in physical confrontations, but are instead instructing foreign nationals to pack up their inventory and remove their stock from the premises.

The community’s drastic measures were sparked by the sudden deaths of a 40-year-old man and his four-year-old nephew. Local leaders report that the uncle had purchased food items from a nearby shop operated by a foreign national and subsequently shared the meal with the young child.

Shortly after eating, both the uncle and the toddler fell violently ill. They were urgently transported to a local medical clinic but were pronounced dead upon arrival. According to the community, medical personnel at the facility confirmed that the food—which locals described as expired or substandard—was the direct cause of the fatalities.

The profound grief quickly mobilized the neighborhood. A local councilor was summoned late at night to console the bereaved family. Recognizing the depth of the community’s sorrow and anger, parents and local leaders united to ensure no other family in the ward would suffer a similar loss, prompting the coordinated shutdown of the shops.

In response to the escalating situation, the local government has intervened to manage the crisis and maintain public order. Millicent Shabangu, Speaker of the eMalahleni Local Municipality, addressed the community’s grievances and received a formal memorandum from the residents. The document outlined serious concerns regarding illegal immigration and the proliferation of businesses selling unsafe or illicit goods within their neighborhoods.

To prevent the situation from devolving into bloodshed, law enforcement officials have been heavily deployed to the Klarinet area. Speaker Shabangu emphasized that the municipality’s primary focus is preserving human life, expressing profound heartbreak over the loss of a young child.

“We are making sure that there is no killing of people and no violence,” Shabangu stated, noting that the municipality shares the community’s deep concern over the tragedy. She further clarified that the local government regularly conducts its own compliance operations targeting foreign nationals operating within the Emalahleni municipal boundaries to ensure that trade bylaws and regulations are strictly upheld.
