VANDERBIJLPARK, GAUTENG — Seven Emfuleni Municipality employees have been arrested in connection with a sophisticated electricity fraud, theft, and essential infrastructure tampering scheme in Gauteng. The Provincial Anti-Corruption Task Team (PKTT) apprehended the suspects, who are assigned to the local Revenue and Electrical Departments, for allegedly accepting unauthorized payments to illegally reconnect disconnected power grids.
The coordinated law enforcement operation unfolded in Vanderbijlpark, resulting in the initial detention of five suspects on Friday, followed by the arrest of two additional individuals on Saturday morning. Authorities indicate that the accused exploited their official positions by approaching residents whose electricity had been legitimately disconnected due to unpaid municipal fees.
SAPS Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe emphasized that these illicit reconnections have caused substantial financial damage and accelerated electricity theft within the municipality. The employees allegedly misrepresented their authority, convincing residents to transfer reconnection fees directly into their personal bank accounts before restoring power outside of official municipal channels.
While the exact monetary value of the bribes remains under investigation, law enforcement officials have signaled that the probe is active and expanding. The seven accused are currently slated for their first court appearance at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court.
