NORTHERN CAPE — A 50-year-old man, Ernest Khoza, has been handed a 25-year effective prison sentence following his conviction for a brutal Warrenton house robbery and rape. The Frances Baard District Management welcomed the sentencing, which brings a definitive legal conclusion to a harrowing 2018 home invasion that targeted a young family.
On Tuesday, 11 August 2026, the court sentenced Khoza to 15 years in prison for house robbery and an additional 15 years for rape. These sentences will run concurrently with a prior five-year term he was already serving, culminating in an effective 25 years of direct imprisonment.
The conviction relates to a traumatic event that unfolded on Thursday, 29 November 2018. While the 34-year-old victim slept at her Warrenton residence with her husband and their two-year-old child, two armed intruders breached the home. One attacker, masked in a balaclava, aggressively demanded money from the husband.
The intruders violently assaulted the husband, administering electric shocks to him with a wire. He was then moved to an adjacent bedroom where the couple’s twin daughters were sleeping, and his limbs were bound. Meanwhile, the second suspect looted the property, making off with a television set and other household goods.
In a particularly egregious act, Khoza forced the victim—who was still holding her toddler—into the main bedroom. After ordering her to place the child on the floor, he raped her while the two-year-old daughter was present in the room.
The assailants fled the scene shortly after the attack. The victim managed to untie her husband and secure her children before contacting law enforcement. The case was subsequently handed over to Detective Sergeant Desmond Modise of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigating Unit.
Through rigorous investigative efforts, Modise tracked the suspects to Barkly West, resulting in their arrest on 26 February 2019. During the legal proceedings, the victim successfully identified Khoza, leading to his prosecution. A second accused individual was acquitted after investigators could not establish a definitive link to the crime.

Authorities emphasized that his relentless commitment to the investigation was the driving force behind apprehending the perpetrator and securing a substantial prison term for these severe offenses.
