MPUMALANGA – A fatal motor vehicle crash in the Marble Hall policing area has exposed a direct link to a violent armed robbery at a Dennilton filling station, resulting in the deaths of two suspects and the recovery of a significant cache of firearms and ammunition.
In the early hours of Tuesday, 08 September 2026, at approximately 02:30, a group of roughly 13 unidentified armed men stormed the filling station located at Moteti Complex in Dennilton, Sekhukhune District. Armed with handguns and rifles, the suspects confronted the on-site security guards and cashier. They then advanced to the cash office, where an explosive device was allegedly deployed to breach the drop safe. After securing an undisclosed amount of cash, the group fled the premises on foot, discharging several firearm rounds during their escape.
The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit immediately assumed control of the crime scene to lead the investigation. Investigators successfully recovered multiple pistol and rifle cartridges from the site, providing crucial forensic evidence.
Later that morning, at approximately 05:10, law enforcement received reports of a severe motor vehicle accident. A white Nissan Navara, bearing a Mpumalanga registration, had overturned on the R573 road between Slaagboom and Siyabuswa, in the direction of Marble Hall.
Upon responding to the crash site, police discovered two male occupants inside the vehicle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, who had sustained severe head trauma, was urgently transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical care.
A thorough search of the accident scene yielded a substantial recovery of weapons and munitions. Seized items included:
– One R5 rifle
– Two R5 magazines
– 56 rounds of R5 ammunition
– Two 9mm pistols
– One empty 9mm magazine
– One 9mm round of ammunition
Consequently, Marble Hall SAPS has officially registered cases of culpable homicide alongside charges for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The two deceased individuals have been formally identified as men aged 34 and 35. Preliminary investigative findings have positively connected both deceased suspects to the earlier business robbery at the Dennilton filling station.
The investigation remains active as authorities work diligently to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the armed syndicate. Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers publicly welcomed the successful recovery of the firearms and the critical investigative breakthrough that definitively links the deceased suspects to the violent robbery.
