GAUTENG – A high-profile Carletonville illegal mining kingpin was fatally shot during a targeted National Intervention Unit (NIU) operation in Gauteng on Sunday. The tactical raid marks a significant escalation in law enforcement’s campaign to eradicate violent underground syndicates in the region.
Acting on actionable intelligence, operatives from the Pretoria-based NIU tracked the wanted suspect to a residential property in the area. Upon reaching the location, officers formally announced their presence and clearly identified themselves as law enforcement personnel.
According to an NIU spokesperson, the encounter turned lethal when the suspect aggressively aimed an AK-47 assault rifle at the approaching officers. Facing an immediate and severe threat, the police members were compelled to return fire, resulting in fatal gunshot wounds to the suspect.
Investigators subsequently secured the scene and confiscated the weapon involved in the confrontation, recovering one AK-47 rifle alongside 125 rounds of matching ammunition.
An NIU spokesperson confirmed that the deceased was a recognized and highly dangerous figure within the local illicit mining hierarchy. Authorities believe he played a central and instigating role in the persistent, violent turf war between two competing illegal mining factions operating in the Carletonville area.
A SAPS spokesperson emphasized that this neutralization is part of a broader, intensified strategy. The South African Police Service remains firmly committed to dismantling organized illegal mining networks, disrupting the logistical operations of these criminal syndicates, and restoring stability and safety to communities historically plagued by mining-related violence.
