LIMPOPO — A 25-year-old foreign national has been arrested following a significant Limpopo illicit cigarettes seizure, resulting in the recovery of illegal tobacco products valued at R35,000.
Eldrie Ngwenya, a Zimbabwean national, was taken into custody after members of the Limpopo Provincial Flying Squad executed an intelligence-driven operation on Sunday, 05 July 2026. Law enforcement received information regarding a white Audi A4 that was allegedly being utilized to transport and distribute illicit Remington Gold cigarettes across the Polokwane and Tzaneen areas.
Acting on this intelligence, officers traced the vehicle and initiated a stop within the Ladanna policing precinct. A subsequent search of the Audi uncovered a large quantity of the illegal Remington Gold cigarettes, leading to the driver’s immediate arrest at the scene.
Ngwenya appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 06 July 2026, facing formal charges of possession and transportation of illicit cigarettes. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to reappear in court on 09 July 2026 for further proceedings.
Major General Jan Scheepers, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, commended the members of the Provincial Flying Squad for their operation. He praised their vigilance and swift action, noting that their efforts played a critical role in disrupting the illegal cigarette trade within the province.
Police investigations into the matter remain ongoing as authorities continue to probe the broader distribution network.
