Former ANC North West Treasurer Arrested at O.R. Tambo Airport Over Madlanga Commission Inquiry

PRETORIA, Gauteng — A former ANC North West treasurer has been arrested after failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The 49-year-old political figure was apprehended yesterday at O.R. Tambo International Airport just moments before boarding an international flight, suggesting an attempt to flee the country.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the arrest of the 49-year-old suspect but has withheld his official name pending his first appearance in court. However, his identity is widely known following intense public and investigative scrutiny. He is expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today.

Madlanga Commission Subpoena Non-Compliance

The arrest stems directly from the suspect’s failure to comply with subpoenas issued by the Madlanga Commission. According to officials, he is one of only two individuals who have failed to appear before the inquiry. This non-compliance prompted the chairperson of the commission to direct the commission’s secretary to lay criminal charges and prosecute the individuals involved.

Beyond his interactions with the commission, the suspect has been under investigation by the political killings task team.

Financial Scrutiny and Controversial Tenders

The former treasurer’s financial dealings have come under heavy scrutiny, particularly his relationship with controversial businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala. Evidence presented to the commission indicates that the suspect received a R10 million payout from a R360 million Medicare tender that was awarded to Matlala.

Discrepancies have also emerged regarding the suspect’s financial involvement in the Medicare 24 contract. When testifying before the commission, Matlala stated that the arrested former treasurer was an investor in the contract who had invested more than R20 million. However, when the suspect himself appeared before the commission previously, he testified that his investment in the venture was only R10 million.

Ailing Municipalities and Unfulfilled Contracts

Further allegations complicating the suspect’s financial profile involve multi-million rand contracts awarded by North West municipalities. Reports indicate that these municipalities are currently ailing, yet the suspect allegedly received massive payouts without providing any corresponding work or services for the contracts issued to him.

Court Proceedings Underway

Legal proceedings at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court are scheduled to commence at 9:00 AM. However, legal observers note that first appearances often involve significant administrative delays, meaning the suspect may take some time to actually stand before the magistrate.

SAPS and the Madlanga Commission are expected to provide further official updates as the judicial process unfolds.
