NELSPRUIT, Mpumalanga — A devastating N4 crash in Mpumalanga has claimed four lives following a chaotic multi-vehicle collision involving two minibus taxis and a freight truck. The fatal incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning on the busy highway corridor connecting Ngodwana and Mbombela, leaving a trail of destruction and sparking a major emergency response.
Preliminary details indicate a catastrophic chain reaction on the highway. A freight truck en route from Johannesburg to Mozambique reportedly struck the rear trailer of a minibus taxi from behind. The force of the impact sent the taxi spinning across the asphalt, though the driver remarkably managed to regain control and pull the vehicle onto the shoulder. The truck, however, lost control and veered off the roadway, coming to a halt. Moments later, a second minibus taxi, traveling in the direction of Mbombela, collided with the immobilized truck and immediately burst into flames.
A survivor from the first minibus taxi recounted the terrifying sequence of events. “We were traveling from Joburg to Maputo when the accident happened,” the survivor explained. “The truck was coming from behind us and it crashed into our trailer. That caused our taxi to spin on the road, but our driver tried to control it until it stopped on the side of the road. The other taxi crashed into the truck and caught fire.”
Reflecting on their narrow escape, the survivor added, “We realize that it means we are alive now because we are here.”
A spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison confirmed that the collision occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. and detailed the grim casualty count.
“Early this morning around 4:00 a.m., one truck was involved with two minibuses,” the department’s spokesperson stated. “Here, four people lost their lives. Three of the deceased were occupants in one of the minibus taxis that caught fire, while the fourth person’s body was found on the road.”
Investigators are currently working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fourth fatality. While it remains unclear which specific vehicle the individual was traveling in, authorities suspect the victim was violently flung from one of the minibus taxis during the initial, chaotic moments of the crash.
As recovery teams work to clear the debris and finalize their on-site investigations, officials have issued a stark warning to the public. Motorists traveling along the N4 route are strongly urged to drive with heightened caution and reduced speed while the accident scene is fully resolved.
