FREE STATE – Law enforcement in the Free State has successfully disrupted a transformer oil theft operation, leading to the arrest of three individuals accused of essential infrastructure tampering. The coordinated intervention occurred at the Serfontein Transnet Sub Station following a rapid, intelligence-driven response by local police and specialized support units.
On Saturday, 25 July 2026, at approximately 08:00, the Heuningspruit SAPS Community Service Centre received vital intelligence regarding a suspicious truck operating within the Serfontein Transnet Sub Station. To neutralize the threat, the Heuningspruit SAPS Community Service Centre immediately coordinated with the Fezile Dabi District Infrastructure Task Team and private security partners to deploy operational support to the area.
The rapid deployment proved highly effective. As the targeted vehicle attempted to exit the sub-station grounds, the joint task force swiftly intercepted it. A subsequent search of the truck uncovered three male occupants, aged 27, 42, and 43.
Investigators located two sizable tanks secured in the rear of the vehicle. One of the tanks was filled with transformer oil, carrying an estimated value of R36,000. Initial on-scene assessments conducted by the Fezile Dabi District Infrastructure Task Team indicated that the liquid had been illicitly drained and stolen directly from the sub-station’s transformers.
The three men were taken into immediate custody. They now face severe legal action, including charges for the possession of suspected stolen property and the tampering with, damaging, or destroying of essential infrastructure.
The suspects remain in police detention and are slated to make their first appearance at the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court in the coming days. Authorities continue to emphasize their zero-tolerance approach to the sabotage and theft of critical regional infrastructure.
