Ghana to Repatriate 300 Citizens Amid South Africa Xenophobic Attacks

The Ghanaian government has begun repatriating approximately 300 nationals caught up in recent anti-immigrant violence in South Africa. President John Dramani Mahama this week granted approval for the foreign affairs ministry to oversee the evacuation, which includes covering costs for those without required travel documents.

According to Ghana’s envoy in South Africa, the process will prioritize individuals who have been specifically targeted in widespread attacks. At least 200 Ghanaians have reportedly filed cases of forced business takeovers and harassment, particularly in the KwaZulu-Natal area. The embassy has issued repeated warnings for Ghanaians to stay indoors and avoid protest zones.

The latest wave of xenophobic incidents began in early April 2026, when protests broke out across several South African provinces demanding jobs for local citizens.
