LIMPOPO — In a tragic case of familial violence, reports confirm that Giyani police arrest son for alleged murder of 82-year-old mother in Xikukwani village following a gruesome discovery in the early hours of Wednesday, 23 September 2026.
Law enforcement officials received a distress call at approximately 01:00 and immediately proceeded to the identified residence. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the elderly woman lying on her bed, suffering from severe, visible injuries to her head and face. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel who responded to the home sadly certified the 82-year-old victim dead on arrival.
The victim’s 48-year-old son, who resided with her, was the individual who initially reported the incident to the authorities. According to his preliminary statement, the suspect claimed he had just returned home from a drinking spree when he discovered his mother lying injured on the bed.
However, as detectives commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the death, evidence subsequently linked the son directly to the fatal assault. He was taken into custody and is currently facing a formal charge of murder.
Furthermore, investigators are actively exploring reports suggesting the deceased may have been sexually assaulted. Authorities have confirmed that an additional charge of rape will be added to the suspect’s docket should the ongoing forensic and medical investigations establish sufficient evidence to support the allegation.
The 48-year-old suspect is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 September 2026.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, issued a strong condemnation of the brutal killing and issued a passionate plea for communities to actively protect the most vulnerable members of society.
“The killing of an elderly mother, allegedly at the hands of her own son, is a shocking violation of the most basic values of humanity,” Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers stated. “We condemn this heinous act in the strongest possible terms. The SAPS will pursue this matter relentlessly, and whoever is found responsible must face the full might of the law.”
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death remains ongoing as authorities await further forensic results and the outcome of the suspect’s court appearance.
