The South African Transport Minister has appealed to the liquid fuels sector to strengthen its partnership with the state to foster national economic prosperity. These directives were delivered during the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa Annual Imbizo, which took place at the Sandton Convention Centre this week.
Acknowledging the sector’s need for predictability, the Minister stressed that robust alliances must be forged across government, state-owned entities, regulatory bodies, investors, infrastructure users, and organized industry groups. It was emphasized that the logistics sector’s current hurdles cannot be resolved by state intervention alone, and that unlocking future opportunities demands a unified vision and shared dedication.
The Ministry recognized the fuel sector as a cornerstone of the national economy, citing its critical function in facilitating mobility, driving industrial production, underpinning trade and logistics, and generating substantial employment and investment. A reliable and adequate fuel supply chain was identified as essential for economic stability. Consequently, the state is dedicated to fostering a conducive operational climate through sound policy regulation, strategic infrastructure planning, and strict oversight of transport and logistics state-owned enterprises.
Looking ahead, the expansion of the liquid fuels market was described as dependent on modern, secure, and highly efficient infrastructure, alongside transparent government frameworks that guarantee investor certainty, user transparency, and market confidence. To advance this agenda, the Transport Department is collaborating closely with Transnet and the Transnet Ports Authority.
This collaboration focuses on multiple projects designed to enhance infrastructure planning, operational efficiency, safety protocols, and long-term capital investment specifically within the Island View precinct at the Port of Durban. These strategic upgrades are intended to satisfy present demand while preparing the country to handle anticipated increases in fuel imports, storage capacity, and related logistics services.
Reassuring industry stakeholders of ongoing state support, the Minister outlined the ultimate goal of establishing a highly efficient, competitive, and sustainable transport and logistics network tailored to an expanding economy. The address concluded with a call for joint effort to ensure that the nation’s critical infrastructure consistently guarantees energy security, stimulates investment, and sustains economic advancement for future generations.
