PRETORIA, Gauteng — The viral crowdfunding campaign to replace the Hawks officer Karl Sander coffee machine has shattered its modest R5,000 target, ultimately securing R686,000 from thousands of generous South Africans. What began as a simple effort to buy a new appliance has evolved into a massive national movement celebrating integrity, generosity, and public service.
The grassroots fundraising effort was sparked by Sander’s testimony at the Madlanga Commission, where he revealed that his coffee machine—which he affectionately described as his “only safe space”—had been stolen directly from his office. However, the warrant officer did not start the campaign himself. It was launched by his friend Kyle van Reenen, a former paramedic, who was moved by the testimony and wanted to rally public support to show appreciation for Sander’s years of dedicated service.
Catherine Swanepoel, Chief Growth Officer at BackaBuddy, the crowdfunding platform hosting the drive, confirmed the staggering final numbers. “685,000 rand, 2,800 donors,” Swanepoel noted, highlighting the immense public response that pushed the total to R686,000.
From a Coffee Machine to K9 Units and Training Facilities
Instead of keeping the massive windfall for himself, Sander has outlined highly selfless plans for the surplus funds. According to Swanepoel, who has been coordinating directly with the officer and his legal team, Sander intends to use the money to significantly aid law enforcement efforts.
His plans include purchasing two specially trained drug detection dogs for the South African Police Service (SAPS) and acquiring modern narcotics testing kits for SAPS members. Furthermore, he intends to fund a training facility that he will utilize after his retirement.
“He’s talking about things like getting two specially trained drug detection dogs… purchasing modern narcotics testing kits… and a training facility for when he retires,” Swanepoel remarked, praising the officer’s selfless intentions. “If it was my money, I’m not sure I would be so generous. It would probably go straight to my pension plan.”
Navigating SAPS Regulations and Legal Trust
Despite the successful fundraising, distributing the money is a complex logistical challenge because Sander remains an active SAPS member. Strict internal regulations govern the acceptance of large gifts and donations by serving police officers to prevent conflicts of interest, bribery, or corruption.
To navigate these legal hurdles, BackaBuddy is working closely with Sander’s legal team to complete the necessary mandate documentation. The R686,000 is currently being held by the platform and will be transferred into an attorney’s trust account. The funds will remain securely in the trust until Sander completes all mandatory internal SAPS processes, ensuring that every rand is legally accounted for and transparently managed before he receives the donation.
Combating Copycat Campaigns and Ensuring Donor Trust
The massive success of the fundraiser inevitably attracted copycat pages. Addressing the risk of fraudulent mirror campaigns, Swanepoel explained that BackaBuddy, which has operated for over 11 years, employs rigorous verification protocols to protect the public.
The platform requires identification documents and supporting paperwork for all campaigns, and works directly with banks to ensure all receiving accounts are FICA-verified. If a campaign raises red flags or fails to meet verification requirements, it can be immediately paused and donors refunded.
“We exist for the donors. We are here to make sure that the donors trust the platform and feel confident to donate on it,” Swanepoel emphasized, noting that while the friction of verification can sometimes be frustrating, it is an essential safeguard.
Evaluating Brand Alignment and Cancelling Polarizing Campaigns
The surge in crowdfunding has also led to an increase in politically aligned campaigns, prompting internal reviews at BackaBuddy. Swanepoel and BackaBuddy CEO Patrick Scoffield frequently evaluate these initiatives at the executive committee level to ensure they align with the platform’s mission of creating a positive social impact across Africa.
Swanepoel revealed that the platform recently cancelled a politically aligned campaign following significant public outcry. After determining that the fundraiser violated their terms and conditions and did not align with their core brand values, the executive team paused the initiative. The few donors who had contributed to the cancelled campaign were fully refunded.
