Hennenman Shooting: Free State Police Officer Kills Three, Injures Two Before Taking His Own Life

A deadly shooting in Hennenman has left four people dead, including the gunman, and two others wounded after a 47-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) member opened fire before turning the weapon on himself.

The deceased officer was stationed locally as a Rural Safety Coordinator. According to authorities, he allegedly shot five individuals during the incident, leaving three dead and two injured.

The South African Police Service in the Free State has released a statement expressing profound shock and deep concern over the tragic event. Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia strongly denounced the violence and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

In the wake of the tragedy, Lt. Gen. Lesia has mandated a thorough probe into the events and circumstances leading up to the shootings.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has stepped in to handle the matter. IPID will officially register and investigate the case under the dockets of murder, attempted murder, and an inquest.

Authorities have confirmed that further updates will be provided to the public as the investigation progresses.
