PIETERMARITZBURG, KwaZulu-Natal — A disturbing discovery at Mountain Rise Cemetery in Pietermaritzburg has intensified calls for enhanced security and urgent maintenance at the neglected KwaZulu-Natal burial ground. Workers recently uncovered what appears to be a human skull resting on a grave, alongside suspected ritualistic items, highlighting years of ongoing concerns regarding vandalism, criminal activity, and inadequate oversight at the facility.
The unsettling findings are part of a broader pattern of decay at the cemetery. For years, the site has been plagued by broken graves, stolen tombstones, damaged memorial walls, and poor general maintenance. The latest incident involves not only the unidentified skull but also the discovery of a dead black fowl with a knife pierced through it, accompanied by a burnt red candle and a red cloth or sheet near a security office and an unidentified grave. Community members suspect these items are the remnants of a ritual, though the exact origins remain unclear and no one could immediately explain if a specific grave had been disturbed.
Reporting these incidents proves difficult, as municipal offices are typically closed over the weekend when such discoveries are often made, leaving workers and visitors unsure of who to contact. Furthermore, the cemetery’s proximity to the Ghost Town informal settlement has exacerbated issues with uncontrolled movement and vagrancy. Residents report that individuals frequently use the cemetery grounds to commit crimes, with one recent operation allegedly uncovering a vagrant sleeping next to a skeleton.
The desecration extends to the cemetery’s Wall of Remembrance. Officials and community members have expressed deep distress over opened boxes and scattered ashes of deceased loved ones found on the floor alongside a broken wall. Due to fears that vagrants are misusing the remains—reportedly mixing the ashes with substances—authorities have sensitized the community and are now encouraging families to relocate their loved ones’ remains to alternative walls of remembrance in town, at local hospices, or at churches, rather than keeping them at this compromised location.
Law enforcement officials have stated that no criminality has currently been established in connection with the skull discovery, and no formal police investigation is underway. Police emphasized that the Msunduzi Municipality must first establish the facts of the matter and refer it to law enforcement only if evidence of a crime is uncovered.
The municipality reportedly requested additional time to respond to the growing crisis but had not provided a formal statement or action plan at the time of the initial reports. As concerns mount, community members continue to demand accountability and tangible improvements to protect the dignity of the deceased and the safety of the grounds.
