JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — Johannesburg Water has issued an urgent warning regarding possible Bezuidenhout Valley water contamination following severe damage to a local pipeline.
According to a statement released by the bulk water supplier, the infrastructure damage occurred when a tree fell onto the water pipeline. The incident took place during active excavation work conducted by a contractor who was in the process of replacing a nearby sewer pipe.
In response to the breach, Johannesburg Water has immediately isolated the affected water supply. The utility emphasized that the restriction will remain strictly in place until comprehensive laboratory results confirm that the water is completely safe for public use.
To mitigate the impact on the community, Johannesburg Water confirmed that an alternative water supply is being provided to residents for the duration of the restriction. Technicians are currently on the ground collecting water samples for rigorous laboratory testing to ensure the network meets all required municipal quality standards.
The utility has assured the public that it will officially notify customers as soon as water quality clearance is received from its laboratories, at which point the normal water supply can safely resume. Residents in the affected area are advised to exercise caution and rely on the provided alternative water sources until further notice.
