Katlehong Mass Shooting Death Toll Rises to Four Amid Election Tensions in Ekurhuleni

KATLEHONG, Ekurhuleni — The death toll in the recent Katlehong mass shooting has risen to four after two additional victims succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. The fatal attack, which occurred on Sophangisa Street in Ekurhuleni, has intensified concerns over political violence just weeks before the local government elections.

Officials confirmed that the victims were returning from a memorial service for an African National Congress (ANC) member who was fatally shot at his home a week prior. Initially, two young men, aged 21 and 23, were pronounced dead at the scene. Several others, including two minors, were rushed to the hospital with severe gunshot wounds.

An eyewitness, whose identity is being concealed for safety reasons, described a chaotic and targeted scene. According to the eyewitness, a seven-seater vehicle approached Sophangisa Street and opened fire on the group while they were still inside their own vehicle. The suspect then allegedly exited the vehicle to continue shooting at those who had fallen to the ground.

Community members noted that the gunman was wearing the regalia of a rival political party. Police spokespersons confirmed that one suspect has since handed himself over to authorities.

The incident has cast a dark shadow over the region’s fragile political landscape. Just two days prior, three ANC councilors were expelled from the party in the Ekurhuleni region. Furthermore, ANC Deputy President Paul Mashatile was scheduled to visit the area to campaign, highlighting the heightened tensions as the elections approach. The Political Killings Task Team has taken the forefront in investigating the massacre to determine if the expulsions and the shooting are linked.

Community spokespersons and local residents remain terrified, with citizens urging volunteers and political candidates to exercise extreme caution during the canvassing period. Local leaders are now looking to the Deputy President’s upcoming visit to address the killings, condemn the violence, and provide reassurance to the terrified residents of Ekurhuleni.
