FREE STATE – A 29-year-old kidnapping victim was rescued and six suspects were arrested in Welkom following a swift, coordinated tactical operation by Free State law enforcement units. The successful intervention halted an active ransom demand and resulted in the seizure of unlicensed firearms and multiple vehicles.
According to officials from the Free State Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, the incident began on Friday, 24 July 2026, when the 29-year-old man was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint from his residence in Steyn. The matter was promptly reported to the Welkom Police and the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit based in Thabong.
During the ordeal, the victim’s family received telephone calls from the alleged suspects demanding an undisclosed ransom amount in exchange for the victim’s safe release.
In response to the escalating situation, the Welkom K9 Unit and the Parkweg Tactical Response Team (TRT) were activated. Acting on received intelligence, the joint task team tracked the suspects to a residential property in Flamingo Park.
Law enforcement officers utilized their tactical expertise to approach and surround the identified house. Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects attempted to flee the scene but were quickly apprehended by the waiting units.
Upon searching the premises, officers discovered the 29-year-old victim inside the garage with both hands tied behind his back. Officials reported that he was found in a severe state of shock, having sustained injuries to the back of his head, as well as bruising on his hands and feet.
A subsequent investigation at the location led to the seizure of two handguns, ammunition, and three vehicles. Further inquiries revealed that one of the recovered vehicles had reportedly been stolen in Winburg.
The six male suspects, ranging in age from 28 to 46, are scheduled to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026. They face formal charges of kidnapping, extortion, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
