Kimberley Service Delivery Crisis: Roodepan Residents Demand Action Ahead of Polls

Kimberley, Northern Cape — A worsening Kimberley service delivery crisis has sparked widespread anger across the Sol Plaatje Municipality, with residents in Roodepan facing severe sewer overflows and crumbling infrastructure just weeks before next month’s elections.

Communities in the region are expressing deep frustration over a multitude of compounding issues. Beyond the hazardous sewer spills in Roodepan, locals are grappling with deteriorating road networks, persistently high unemployment rates, and what they describe as excessive electricity costs.

Speaking on behalf of the affected neighborhoods, local resident spokespersons described the municipal response as a “service delivery roundabout,” highlighting the endless cycle of unfulfilled commitments. Community representatives emphasized that the lack of basic services has become a massive daily burden, leaving households without adequate support.

Local resident spokespersons noted that these systemic issues have been escalating for 15 to 20 years without any tangible solutions, resulting only in empty promises. Urging municipal leaders to introspect and evaluate their current trajectory, community representatives stressed that the current living conditions are entirely unsustainable.

The physical decay of the infrastructure is so severe that the flooding and sewer spills have left some areas virtually impassable, with frustrated residents noting they practically need boats just to navigate their own streets.

With the upcoming polls scheduled for next month, the deteriorating conditions in Roodepan and the broader Sol Plaatje Municipality have become a central focal point for voters demanding immediate accountability and long-term solutions.
