Kuruman Drug Bust: Suspect Arrested for Mandrax Dealing in Operation Shanela II Crackdown

NORTHERN CAPE — A significant Kuruman drug bust has led to the arrest of a 36-year-old suspect for alleged mandrax dealing, marking a key development in the ongoing execution of Operation Shanela II. Acting on intelligence, local public order policing units executed a targeted residential search that uncovered hidden narcotics and substantial cash believed to be the proceeds of crime.

Attempted Disposal and Seizure of Paraphernalia

The search operation was conducted by members of the Kuruman Public Order Policing unit on Friday, 2 October 2026, at approximately 13:00. When officers arrived at the targeted residence and the suspect opened the door, he appeared visibly flushed and was sweating, immediately raising their suspicions.

Upon entering the premises, officers discovered suspected mandrax tablets positioned next to a toilet in the bathroom. The placement of the narcotics led investigators to conclude that the suspect had been attempting to dispose of the drugs down the toilet before the police could secure the scene.

A comprehensive search of the property yielded further evidence of an active drug distribution network. Officers confiscated a substantial amount of cash, alongside drug-related paraphernalia that included a weighing scale and numerous small plastic bags used for packaging narcotics. Several cellular phones, likely used to coordinate illicit transactions, were also seized as evidence.

Arrest and Law Enforcement Commendation

Following the search, a 36-year-old male, who is believed to be a foreign national, was taken into custody. He is currently facing serious drug-related charges, specifically the possession of and dealing in drugs.

Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, the Acting District Commissioner for the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, publicly commended the police members involved in the raid. He praised their continued dedication and swift actions to disrupt the illicit drug trade and apprehend individuals actively distributing narcotics within local communities.

Ongoing Commitment to Community Safety

The Northern Cape SAPS has reiterated its unwavering resolve to combat drug-related crime across the province. According to police leadership, the strategy relies heavily on intelligence-driven operations, targeted searches, and sustained police visibility to effectively dismantle drug syndicates.

Authorities emphasized that these sustained efforts are designed not only to remove illicit substances from the streets but also to hold all individuals involved in the drug trade strictly accountable under the law.

The SAPS continues to urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected criminal activity. Community cooperation is considered a vital component in supporting law enforcement efforts and ultimately creating safer, drug-free neighborhoods.
