KWAZULU-NATAL — A series of severe KZN cold front crashes has left eleven people injured and sparked a harrowing R34 dam rescue, as sudden winter weather battered the province’s North Coast roads. The dangerous driving conditions triggered a frantic multi-vehicle emergency response that kept local medical crews scrambling across multiple jurisdictions.
Operating out of Vryheid and Newcastle, KZPA emergency responders faced a relentless five-hour stretch between 15h00 and 20h00 yesterday. The arrival of a bitter weather system dumped rain and snow across the region, creating treacherous, slippery surfaces that directly contributed to seven distinct traffic collisions.
The most perilous situation unfolded at Bloedriver Poort along the R34. A family car lost control on the slick tarmac, veered off the road, and submerged into a local dam. Fighting near-freezing temperatures, advanced rescue technicians executed a swift water extraction to pull all four family members from the wreckage.
A KZPA Spokesperson confirmed that the victims required immediate treatment for hypothermia due to their extended time in the icy water. The mother was hospitalized with serious trauma, including suspected bone fractures, while the father and their two children—a 14-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl—escaped with minor physical injuries.
The carnage was not isolated to the water rescue. Further along the same R34 corridor linking Bloedriver to the N11, a second automobile rolled over, resulting in minor injuries for its three passengers.
Meanwhile, within the Vryheid town limits, a bakkie driver lost control on Kerk Street and slammed violently into a tree. This impact left two individuals in serious condition, battling suspected chest trauma and multiple fractures. Rounding out the chaotic evening was a separate two-car pileup on the N11 near Ingogo, which added three more patients with minor wounds to the day’s casualty toll.
Medics stabilized every victim at their respective scenes before transferring them to regional medical facilities for ongoing care.
With the severe weather system still lingering, a KZPA Spokesperson is pleading with the public to prioritize safety on the roads. Drivers are strongly advised to reduce speeds and remain highly vigilant, as ongoing snow, rain, and icy surfaces continue to compromise road integrity throughout the affected districts.
