MAHIKENG, North West — A sweeping North West cabinet shake-up has officially altered the region’s political landscape, as Premier Lazarus Mokgosi restructured his leadership team to guide the Seventh Administration into its next operational phase. Unveiled in the provincial capital, this marks the most significant overhaul of the executive council since the current government took the reins in 2024.
Detailing the rationale behind the executive changes, Mokgosi explained that a rigorous evaluation of departmental performance necessitated the strategic moves. The restructuring sees several familiar political faces taking on entirely new portfolios in an effort to inject fresh energy into the province’s administrative machinery.
In one of the most notable transitions, Wessels Morweng shifts from his previous oversight of Community Safety and Transport Management to head up the Arts, Culture, Sports, and Recreation department. Stepping into the vacant transport and community safety role is Virginia Tlhapi, who takes over the combined portfolio.
The education sector also sees a complete leadership swap. Viola Motsumi has been removed from her post as Education MEC, making way for Desbo Mohono. Mohono brings deep legislative experience to the department, having previously served as the Speaker of the provincial legislature. Addressing the legislative side of the transition, the Premier confirmed he had engaged with the current Speaker to ensure a smooth handover and finalize the new education appointment.
Despite the ruling ANC’s positive reception of the new lineup, opposition factions argue that the North West cabinet shake-up lacks administrative substance. Fanon Moema, serving as the North West EFF Spokesperson, sharply criticized the maneuver as an exercise in internal party politics. According to Moema, the administration is using the restructuring to settle political scores rather than focusing on tangible service delivery for residents. The EFF spokesperson questioned the logic of simply rotating existing MECs between departments when broader questions regarding the cabinet’s overall competence remain unresolved, labeling the move purely opportunistic.
The Democratic Alliance echoed these frustrations, with North West DA leader Freddy Sonakile arguing that the executive overhaul lacked any material justification. Sonakile characterized the leadership changes as a display of political flexing by the Premier to reassert his authority within the province, rather than a merit-based decision aimed at administrative improvement.
Standing by his strategy against the wave of criticism, Mokgosi maintains that the core objective driving these provincial executive changes remains the optimization of government operations and the acceleration of essential service delivery for the public.
