GAUTENG — A Tembisa South rapist has been handed life imprisonment, marking a decisive legal victory against gender-based violence in the region. The Tembisa Magistrate’s Court finalized the sentencing of 47-year-old Philani Gatsheni Ndlovu, holding him fully accountable for the horrific 2022 assault of a minor.
The court heard that the ordeal began on 20 September 2022, in the Welamlambo Section of Tembisa South. The 12-year-old survivor had a history of being asked by her neighbor to purchase cigarettes on his behalf. On the day of the attack, after she delivered the items, the accused forcibly dragged the child into his residence, secured the door, and raped her on two separate occasions. The victim later testified that she was unable to cry out for assistance because the yard was entirely deserted at the time.
Breaking her silence, the young survivor confided in her peers. One of these friends promptly notified the victim’s parents, who immediately took action to protect their child. The family reported the crime to the Tembisa South South African Police Service (SAPS), initiating a formal criminal docket.
The sensitive case was assigned to Detective Warrant Officer Kolobe Amia Kwenaite, operating out of the Tembisa Family Violence, Child Protection Services, and Sexual Offences Unit. Through rigorous and methodical police work, she successfully tracked down and apprehended the suspect, laying the groundwork for a robust prosecution.
Following a comprehensive legal process, Philani Gatsheni Ndlovu was found guilty on 3 July 2026. The presiding officers at the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court imposed a life sentence for rape, reflecting the extreme gravity of the offense committed against a child.
