LIMPOPO — A 23-year-old man, Asiashu David Mlangeni, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sibasa Regional Court for the rape and kidnapping of a 32-year-old woman more than a decade ago, marking a definitive resolution to a long-pending criminal case.
In addition to the life sentence for the rape conviction, Mlangeni was handed an additional five years’ imprisonment for the kidnapping charge. The successful prosecution and sentencing follow a meticulous and comprehensive investigation led by Sergeant Khathutshelo Dorris Vele of the Thohoyandou Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, publicly welcomed the court’s decisive ruling. He commended Sergeant Vele and all law enforcement personnel involved for their unwavering dedication and perseverance in pursuing justice for the victim. Lieutenant General Scheepers emphasized that the considerable time elapsed since the offences were committed did not diminish the police’s commitment to holding the perpetrator accountable and delivering closure to the survivor.
This sentencing underscores the ongoing efforts within the regional justice system to address historical gender-based violence cases and reinforce the message that perpetrators will be pursued regardless of the passage of time.
