LIMPOPO — Law enforcement authorities in Limpopo have dismantled a significant illegal trade operation, confiscating R100,000 worth of dagga and illicit cigarettes during a targeted arrest in the Sekhukhune District. The bust highlights the ongoing provincial crackdown on the distribution of contraband goods and narcotics.
The operation took place on Thursday, 22 October 2026, at approximately 13:00. Acting on actionable intelligence regarding illegal activities at a residence in the Mahlakola Section under the Masemola policing area, officers launched a crime prevention sweep. Upon reaching the property, law enforcement conducted a thorough search of the premises.
During the search, officers discovered a substantial quantity of compressed dagga carefully packaged in plastic bags, alongside a large cache of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes. When questioned, the 57-year-old male occupant could not provide a lawful or satisfactory explanation for possessing the contraband. He was arrested on the spot.
The confiscated dagga and illegal tobacco products carry an estimated combined street value of R100,000. In addition to the narcotics and cigarettes, investigators seized a significant amount of cash at the scene, which is suspected to be the proceeds of these illegal activities.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 October 2026. He faces formal charges of dealing in dagga and possession of illicit cigarettes.
Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, commended the investigating team for their successful operation. Scheepers praised their sustained and relentless efforts to eradicate both the illicit trade of goods and drug trafficking across the province.
Police investigations into the matter remain ongoing as authorities continue to trace the broader supply chain of the contraband.
