LIMPOPO — Law enforcement officials advancing the Maake tavern shooting probe have successfully intercepted a defaced 9mm pistol and arrested a 24-year-old suspect, marking a critical development in the Mopani District attempted murder case.
The intensive investigation was sparked by a violent weekend altercation. According to authorities, the incident unfolded at a local tavern in Mohlatlareng village on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at approximately 23:30. During the disturbance, a male patron was shot in the lower body. He was rapidly transported to a regional hospital, where he continues to receive medical care.
By Monday, August 3, 2026, a robust coalition of investigators—including the Mopani Tracking Team, Maake Detectives, the Maake Tracing Unit, and Tzaneen Police—mobilized to track down the individual responsible for the shooting. Detectives initially raided the primary suspect’s home, but efforts to apprehend the alleged shooter at his residence proved unsuccessful.
Shifting their tactical focus, operatives leveraged fresh intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the weapon used in the attack. This breakthrough led the multi-unit task force to a second individual believed to be harboring the firearm. Upon interrogation, the 24-year-old man confessed to taking possession of the gun and agreed to guide officers to a secondary location where it had been stashed.
Hidden beneath articles of clothing, authorities uncovered a 9mm pistol equipped with an empty magazine. Forensic examination at the scene revealed that the weapon’s serial number had been deliberately filed off to thwart tracing efforts. Because the individual could not produce a valid firearm license for the weapon, he was immediately taken into custody on charges of illegal possession.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers highlighted the importance of the bust in curbing local violence, commending the joint task force for their rapid response.
“The recovery of an illegal firearm is a significant step in preventing further violent crimes,” Lieutenant General Scheepers stated.
The 24-year-old man caught with the weapon is slated to face a judge at the Maake Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, where he will formally answer to the charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm.
