Man Faces Murder Charge After Fatal Shooting of Child on Eastern Cape Farm

A hunting expedition at Franshoek Farm, near Ficksburg, ended in tragedy on Friday, 29 May 2026, when a 12-year-old girl from Krugersdorp was fatally shot. A man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the incident and is set to appear before the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court today.

Authorities allege that the deceased’s father and the suspect were hunting together on the property when the suspect’s firearm allegedly discharged accidentally, striking the child. The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency care but was pronounced dead on arrival at approximately 09:00.

The incident was reported to police by hospital staff. Investigators have opened a murder docket and confiscated all firearms registered to the suspect for forensic ballistic analysis as part of the ongoing probe.

The suspect remains in custody on a charge of murder pending his court appearance. Police have withheld the identities of both the suspect and the victim, citing legal protocols involving minors and active judicial proceedings.

The investigation continues under the direction of the Ficksburg Police Station.
