BRYANSTON, JOHANNESBURG — A massive manhunt has been launched in Johannesburg after a dramatic police chase involving a hijacked BMW culminated at the Winifred Mandela Precinct, leaving one suspect in custody and four others on the run.
The high-stakes pursuit originated from a vehicle hijacking case in Norwood. According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, law enforcement and private security patrols spotted the suspected stolen vehicle after it was circulated in the Norwood case. The chase tracked the suspects from the Parkhurst area before they ultimately drove into the busy shopping center’s vicinity.
The BMW was carrying five occupants at the time of the incident. Authorities suspect the group attempted to abandon the vehicle at the mall’s uncovered upper entrance, hoping to blend in with ordinary shoppers to evade capture. However, as police and security closed in, four of the suspects bailed out and fled on foot into the precinct. One suspect remained behind and was swiftly arrested, currently being held in a police vehicle at the scene awaiting processing. In total, at least two vehicles at the scene are believed to be stolen.
During a thorough search of the hijacked BMW, officers uncovered an arsenal of illicit items. A signal jammer, a knife, and various other weapons were discovered inside the car. These items were carefully extracted, placed on the ground, and bagged as evidence to be presented in court.
The active crime scene caused significant disruptions, resulting in chock-a-block traffic as shoppers and visitors were temporarily halted from entering or exiting the complex. While management initially issued a notice warning local residents to stay clear of the area, they later moved to clarify the nature of the event to prevent public panic.
Tshepo, the center manager of the Winifred Mandela Precinct, emphasized that the shopping complex itself was never the target or location of an armed robbery. He explained that the suspects were simply using the parking area as a flight path to escape pursuing law enforcement.
“The incident that happened in the center came from outside of the center,” Tshepo stated, noting that the suspects drove into the precinct and abandoned their vehicle to flee on foot. He assured the public that the actual retail buildings were not compromised and that the center is completely safe.
Following the police sweep of the exterior parking areas, management confirmed that the mall is fully ready to trade. Normal operations are set to resume seamlessly once authorities conclude their final combing of the scene.
Despite the heavy police presence and the discovery of weapons, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities related to the incident. The search for the four remaining fugitives continues.
