MAQUASSI HILLS, NORTH WEST — Staff members at the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality have initiated a picket, insisting on an immediate municipal manager resignation amid growing anger over lapsed third-party payments and missing payroll deductions.
The picketing employees gathered outside the council chambers to deliver their memorandum, citing severe financial distress caused by the ongoing administrative failures. Speaking outside the Speaker’s office, a veteran employee with 15 years of service at the local authority revealed that the financial crisis has been ongoing since February of the previous year. According to the workers, mandatory funds are routinely subtracted from their monthly salaries for various services, but these amounts are never forwarded to the respective service providers, leaving staff struggling to meet their financial obligations.
Addressing the crisis, the municipal Speaker confirmed that an emergency council session was scheduled for 4:00 PM to investigate the missing funds and seek clarity on the issue. The Speaker’s office clarified that its primary mandate is to table the workers’ grievances before the council, which holds the executive authority to appoint or remove the municipal manager. While acknowledging the staff’s valid frustrations, the Speaker declined to comment directly on the call for the manager’s dismissal, noting that the elected councilors would ultimately pronounce themselves on the demand.
The current labor standoff follows a highly publicized and embarrassing recent appearance by the local authority’s officials before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa). During the parliamentary oversight meeting, the municipal delegation was found to be entirely unprepared to answer questions, resulting in the committee chairperson ordering them to leave the proceedings.
The fallout from the Scopa meeting and the ongoing worker unrest has prompted fierce backlash from political voices. Reacting to the incident and the circulating video of the committee proceedings, a representative named Sanko condemned the local authority’s leadership, going as far as to demand that the municipality be completely disbanded.
Sanco characterized the current administration as a “puppet show” where the municipal manager acts as the “puppet master.” Furthermore, Sanco directed heavy criticism at the provincial Member of the Executive Council (MEC), arguing that the local council has proven entirely “useless” by failing to account for its governance failures. Sanko insisted that the current leadership must be removed to resolve the community’s intolerable service delivery challenges.
