WEDELA, GAUTENG — Law enforcement authorities have initiated a massive manhunt following a devastating Gauteng tavern shooting that claimed the lives of 17 people and left 15 others wounded. The brutal weekend massacre unfolded in the West Rand town of Wedela, prompting a major mobilization of specialized police units to track down the perpetrators.
The Attack Unfolds
The horrific attack occurred on Saturday night when a group of eight unidentified gunmen descended upon the local establishment. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the assailants first targeted individuals socializing outside the premises before breaching the interior to continue their assault on those inside.
Initial reports indicate the attackers were heavily armed, utilizing both AK-47 assault rifles and handguns during the relentless barrage of gunfire.
Victims and Casualties
The sheer scale of the tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel who rushed to the scene were forced to declare all 17 victims deceased on the spot.
SAPS confirmed the demographics of the fallen, noting that the deceased comprised 13 men and four women. Meanwhile, 15 additional survivors sustained severe gunshot wounds and were urgently transported to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.
Robbery and Arson
Beyond the indiscriminate killings, the incident also involved elements of armed robbery and property destruction. Before making their escape, the suspects reportedly searched through the belongings of the patrons, confiscating their mobile phones.
The gunmen then fled the bloodied scene in two unidentified vehicles. In a final act of destruction, they set two other vehicles ablaze before disappearing into the night.
