MIDDLEBURG, MPUMALANGA — Law enforcement officials have announced a major Middelburg stolen diesel tanker arrest after intercepting a vehicle carrying a massive, undocumented load of fuel in the central business district. Two suspects are now in custody following the recovery of the suspected stolen property, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat fuel-related crimes in the region.
Late-Night Interception in the CBD
The incident unfolded on Monday, 26 October 2026, at approximately 22:00. Members of the Nkangala Anti-Hijacking Task Team were conducting routine stop-and-search operations in the Middelburg CBD when they noticed a white Mercedes-Benz tanker truck moving unusually slowly along Walter Sisulu Street, near Mandela Drive.
Officers signaled the vehicle to stop and found two male occupants inside. Upon searching the truck, police discovered it was transporting approximately 16,000 litres of diesel.
The occupants were asked to produce proof of purchase, transport permits, or any documentation authorizing them to move the fuel. When the men failed to provide any valid paperwork, the two suspects—aged 20 and 27—were arrested on the spot for the possession of suspected stolen property.
Millions in Assets Seized
The financial scale of the intercepted operation is substantial. Police have successfully seized the white Mercedes-Benz tanker, which is valued at approximately R850,000. Additionally, the 16,000 litres of suspected stolen diesel are valued at around R480,000, bringing the total estimated value of the recovered exhibits to R1.33 million.
The two suspects are expected to make their first appearance at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court in the near future to face charges.
Police Commend Task Team
Following the successful operation, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, publicly commended the task team members.
Lieutenant General Modise praised the officers for their vigilance and alertness, noting that their swift and decisive actions directly led to the recovery of the suspected stolen fuel and the apprehension of the suspects before the illicit cargo could be distributed.
