FREE STATE — Law enforcement officials in the Free State have taken an undocumented foreign national into custody after discovering a defaced, unlicensed firearm during a targeted raid on an illegal shebeen in the Kutlwanong area of Odendaalsrus. The 22-year-old suspect was apprehended alongside the confiscation of illicit alcohol, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb the unlicensed liquor trade and illegal weapons in the region.
The operation took place on the morning of Sunday, 12 July 2026, at approximately 05:30. According to police spokespersons, officers from the Odendaalsrus Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) and the Community Service Centre (CSC) were executing routine patrol duties when they detected an unlicensed liquor establishment operating out of the K2 location in Kutlwanong.
Upon arriving at the premises to shut down the unlawfully operating tavern, authorities noticed a 22-year-old African male exhibiting highly suspicious behavior inside the establishment. Prompted by his conduct, officers conducted a search of the individual. Hidden beneath his jacket, they uncovered a silver handgun.
Forensic examination of the seized weapon revealed that its serial number had been intentionally filed off, a common tactic used to obscure a firearm’s origin. Officers also recovered six live rounds of ammunition in the suspect’s possession. Consequently, the young man was arrested for possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Further verification of the suspect’s identity revealed his status as an undocumented foreign national. In addition to the weapons-related offenses, he will be charged with contravening the Immigration Act. He is expected to make his first court appearance at the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court to answer to these combined charges.
The crackdown also resulted in penalties for the illicit business itself. The individual responsible for running the illegal shebeen was issued a fine by authorities, and all remaining liquor stock on the premises was seized and confiscated by the police.
