MIDDELBURG, MPUMALANGA — A catastrophic nine-vehicle crash on the R555 near Middelburg has resulted in four fatalities and left multiple motorists hospitalized, provincial authorities confirmed.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison detailed that the deadly incident unfolded on Monday afternoon. According to officials, the sequence of events began when an articulated truck, which was traveling from Middelburg toward Emalahleni, apparently lost control of the rig.
The heavy vehicle initially struck a passenger car, sparking a chaotic chain reaction across the roadway. As surrounding traffic reacted to the initial impact, multiple vehicles collided with one another. The disaster was further compounded when steel cargo spilled from the truck, causing additional motorists to crash into the fallen metal debris.
Emergency medical teams responded to the extensive wreckage, rushing the wounded to nearby medical facilities. Authorities reported that five individuals were admitted to hospitals in Middelburg and Emalahleni with serious injuries, while three others were treated for minor wounds.
Providing a breakdown of the massive scene, the provincial department confirmed the collision involved exactly nine vehicles. The wreckage included the articulated truck, four light delivery vehicles (LDVs), one SUV, and three other motor vehicles.
Traffic officers have secured the area as a comprehensive investigation is launched to determine the exact cause of the truck losing control and the subsequent fatal pileup.
