Murder Probe: Man Faces Court Over Fatal Boiketlo Street Stabbing

A 36-year-old suspect is expected in the Petrusburg Magistrate’s Court following the deadly stabbing of Lebogang Gratitude Modupe in Bolokanang.

FREE STATE — A fatal stabbing in Bolokanang has led to a murder charge for a 36-year-old man, who is now awaiting his first appearance at the local magistrate’s court. Authorities have launched a full Petrusburg murder investigation after a violent dispute at a neighborhood shop escalated into a deadly attack.

The victim has been identified as Lebogang Gratitude Modupe. According to police spokespersons, the tragic sequence of events unfolded on Sunday, 5 July 2026, at approximately 13:15. The incident originated from a verbal altercation between the suspect and Modupe inside a retail shop situated on Boiketlo Street.

Law enforcement officials report that the confrontation prompted the suspect to temporarily leave the premises. He allegedly traveled to his nearby residence to arm himself with a knife. Returning to the shop, the suspect reportedly pursued Modupe and inflicted a stab wound to the victim’s back. Once Modupe collapsed to the ground, the assailant allegedly continued the assault, repeatedly stabbing the victim while he lay defenseless.

Local police units responded swiftly to emergency calls, arriving at the shop to apprehend the suspect directly at the scene without further incident. Paramedics from Emergency Medical Services also rushed to the location but were unable to save the victim, officially certifying Modupe dead at the scene.

The 36-year-old accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Petrusburg Magistrate’s Court soon to formally answer to the murder charge. Meanwhile, investigators are continuing their work to establish the exact motive and circumstances that triggered the initial argument at the shop.
