Nkomazi Municipality Faces Union Deadline Over Mass Security Staff Dismissals

Mpumalanga – The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) has placed Nkomazi Municipality on notice, demanding the reinstatement of 247 security personnel within two weeks or face potential escalation of industrial action.

The ultimatum follows a protest march organized by the union, during which affected workers delivered a formal memorandum to municipal leadership. SATAWU characterized the dismissals, which took effect in April, as unlawful and procedurally defective, arguing that the employees were terminated without proper consultation or adherence to labour law requirements.

The job losses occurred after the municipality appointed a new external contractor to manage security services. According to union representatives, the incoming company declined to absorb the incumbent workforce, resulting in the immediate termination of all 247 officers.

During the demonstration, workers emphasized the human impact of the dismissals. Many spoke about the difficulty of supporting households, providing for children, and covering medical needs for dependents following the sudden loss of income.

The memorandum was accepted by the Mayor of Nkomazi Municipality. Municipal spokesperson Magagula acknowledged receipt and indicated that leadership has committed to engaging on the matter urgently, with feedback expected within days.

SATAWU has stated that the 14-day window is non-negotiable. Should the municipality fail to reinstate the workers or facilitate their absorption by the new service provider within this timeframe, the union reserves the right to pursue further protected industrial action.

The union continues to advocate for compliance with fair labour practices and has called on the municipality to ensure continuity of employment for the affected security officers.
