Operation Shanela II: Over 1,000 Suspects Arrested in Massive Free State Crime Crackdown

FREE STATE — Law enforcement agencies in the Free State have arrested 1,032 suspects in a sweeping, week-long crime crackdown under Operation Shanela II. The high-density intervention, coordinated by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Multi-sectoral Integrated forces within the Free State Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (ProvJOINTS), targeted violent crimes, property offenses, and illegal activities across the province.

The comprehensive operation resulted in a significant number of arrests for severe offenses. Authorities took 165 suspects into custody for assault causing grievous bodily harm (GBH), alongside 39 for attempted murder and nine for murder. Sexual offenses also featured prominently in the crackdown, with 32 individuals arrested for rape and one for attempted rape.

Property and business-related crimes saw 48 arrests for malicious damage to property, nine for burglary at business premises, three for business robbery, and one for house robbery. Additionally, 49 suspects were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with the remainder of the 1,032 total arrests stemming from various other offenses.

To execute these arrests, the multi-sectoral task team deployed an extensive array of tactical operations across all five districts of the Free State. Officers searched 48,556 individuals and 13,576 vehicles across 498 premises. The ground effort was bolstered by 4,811 general patrols, 403 high-visibility patrols, 940 stop-and-search actions, and the establishment of 214 vehicle checkpoints (VCPs) and 16 roadblocks. Furthermore, specialized tracking teams conducted 338 tracking operations, while detectives executed 196 tracing operations specifically targeting wanted suspects.

Beyond direct law enforcement, the operation placed a strong emphasis on regulatory compliance and community safety. Teams inspected 570 licensed liquor premises, 154 second-hand dealers, and 71 scrapyards and recyclers. As a result of these inspections and related enforcement actions, 14 unlicensed liquor premises were successfully shut down.

Looking ahead, Free State police spokespersons emphasized that the provincial crackdown is far from over. In a statement released on Sunday, the spokespersons confirmed that the planned Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela II policing actions will be sustained to ensure public safety.

“Planned Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela II policing actions will continue to be carried out in areas of concern and identified crime hotspot areas in Fezile Dabi District, Lejweleputswa District, Thabo Mofutsanyane District, Xhariep District and Mangaung Metro,” the Free State police spokespersons stated.
