Law enforcement officials from the OR Tambo District have arrested a 30-year-old man and announced pending legal action against a tavern proprietor following the discovery of an unlicensed firearm at a licensed liquor outlet in Ntsimbini Location on Saturday, 30 May 2026.
The operation unfolded at approximately 23:00 when a district task team, acting on intelligence about a potentially armed individual, entered the tavern under the authority of Section 22 of the Criminal Procedure Act 57 of 1977. Officers located and searched a patron matching the suspect description, recovering an unlicensed 9mm pistol along with ammunition.
The man was taken into custody for violating the Firearms Control Amendment Act 28 of 2006, specifically for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The seized weapon has been submitted for ballistic analysis to determine any potential links to other criminal investigations.
The suspect is set to make his first court appearance at the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 01 June 2026, where he will face charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
In a statement addressing the incident, OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Norman Modishana highlighted the critical role of community involvement in crime prevention. “Public safety requires a two-way partnership, where residents serve as the ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground,” Modishana said. He further confirmed that police will pursue legal action against the tavern’s owner or manager for permitting an armed individual onto the licensed premises.
The South African Police Service reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to illegal firearms and emphasized that licensed establishments bear responsibility for maintaining safe environments in compliance with regulatory requirements.
