KWAZULU-NATAL — Law enforcement officials have initiated a massive police manhunt after eleven people were shot and killed in KwaMakhutha during a tragic late-night gathering. The brutal attack, which unfolded in the Ziko area on Tuesday night, has left the community in shock and triggered a high-priority investigation into the motives behind the bloodshed.
The massacre occurred while a group of 14 individuals—13 men and one woman—were hosting a party inside a residential home. According to authorities, the gathering was violently interrupted when three armed men arrived at the property and opened fire on the attendees.
The initial volley of gunfire claimed the lives of ten victims at the scene, including the female guest, who is believed to have been pregnant. Emergency responders rushed the remaining four survivors to a nearby hospital, but one of them subsequently succumbed to their gunshot wounds, bringing the confirmed death toll to eleven. Three other individuals sustained non-fatal injuries during the ordeal.
As the manhunt intensifies to track down the three fleeing gunmen, investigators are working around the clock to piece together the events leading up to the massacre. KwaZulu-Natal police spokespersons confirmed that the probe is actively exploring the backgrounds of the victims to establish a clear motive.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that some of the victims were on Crime Intelligence’ radar in connection with illegal activities,” police spokespersons stated. They noted that specific details regarding these illicit links are being strictly withheld at this time to protect the integrity and operational security of the ongoing investigation.
While the exact motive for the targeted attack has not been officially confirmed, authorities are exploring all avenues. A police spokesperson indicated that a violent feud between rival groupings is currently being considered as a primary line of inquiry, given the circumstances of the attack and the known profiles of some of those killed.
