EASTERN CAPE — Law enforcement officials in Qonce have arrested a 60-year-old woman on charges related to stock theft, following the successful recovery of seven goats during a targeted police operation. The bust highlights ongoing efforts by the Qonce Stock Theft and Zele police units to dismantle local livestock theft networks.
The intelligence-led intervention was executed on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, within the Luxolweni Administrative Area. Authorities acted on specific, actionable tips regarding a batch of goats that were reportedly taken from the Zele policing jurisdiction earlier in May 2026.
Upon executing a search at the location, officers located and seized seven goats directly tied to the May theft. Consequently, the 60-year-old female suspect was taken into custody. She now faces formal charges of possession of suspected stolen livestock, alongside receiving stolen stock or produce.
The seized animals are currently being held as evidence while investigators work to trace the rightful owners and uncover any broader criminal networks or additional suspects connected to the theft. The accused is slated to make her first appearance at the Qonce Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 23 July 2026.
Following the successful operation, Major General Christopher Wright, the District Commissioner of Buffalo City, issued a statement applauding local residents. He emphasized that the community’s willingness to report suspicious criminal activity remains a vital and effective component in the ongoing fight against stock theft in the region.
