HOUT BAY – A crime intelligence-driven operation in Hout Bay has resulted in the arrest of a 38-year-old man and the confiscation of prohibited marine resources with an estimated street value of R500 000. The targeted raid successfully disrupted an alleged illicit seafood distribution network, recovering a substantial quantity of restricted marine life.
The operation, conducted by members of the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team and the Counterfeit and Illicit Policing Team, took place on Monday, 21 September 2026, at approximately 04:30. Acting on received intelligence, law enforcement officers arrived at an identified address in Hout Bay and executed a comprehensive search of the premises.
During the search, authorities discovered a large quantity of lobsters, abalone, prawns, and lobster eggs hidden inside a large freezer, sealed in various plastic bags. In addition to the illegal seafood, diving equipment and a weighing scale were located and subsequently confiscated. A spokesperson for the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team confirmed that the suspect failed to provide a valid reason for being in possession of the marine resources.
To ensure proper legal and procedural handling of the seized items, officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Environment were dispatched to the scene. A spokesperson for the department verified that all exhibits were meticulously counted and officially confirmed by their representatives on site.
The 38-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of contravention of the Marine Living Resource Act. He has been detained at the Hout Bay South African Police Service (SAPS) station and is scheduled to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
